A student of mindfulness and Buddhist practices for three decades, Mark Coleman, M.A., is a senior meditation teacher at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Marin County, California. He has always been keen to share the fruits of meditation to wider audiences and founded The Mindfulness Institute, where he brings mindfulness trainings to Fortune 500 companies and the non-profit sector. Coleman also has a counseling practice, where he integrates his Masters in Clinical Psychology and meditative work.
Coleman is a poet and author of Awake in the Wild: Mindfulness in Nature as a Path of Self Discovery, and Make Peace with Your Mind: How Mindfulness and Compassion Can Free You from Your Inner Critic. He is an unabashed nature lover and through his organization Awake in the Wild, he leads wilderness meditation retreats from Alaska to Peru.
Coleman recently visited the Insight Meditation Center in New York to share ideas from his book, Make Peace With Your Mind. We sat down together to explore his life’s journey from a young rebel living on the streets of London, to a renowned leader in the mindfulness field and the ways he grounds his practice in the natural world.
