Pathways to Planetary Health Forum: Tim Jackson on Life After Capitalism

On June 2, we continued the Garrison Institute Forum on Pathways to Planetary Health (PPH) with a conversation between award-winning economist and scholar Tim Jackson and Garrison Institute co-founder Jonathan F. P. Rose. Their discussion focused on imagining a world where the shifts in worldviews and systems changes we need for a viable future, redress the underlying cause of climate change, social inequity and financial instability: capitalism itself. This interactive online event was part of a continuing series in the Garrison Institute’s Forum on Pathways to Planetary Health (PPH). Building on the Garrison Institute’s earlier Climate, Mind and Behavior (CMB) program, Pathways to Planetary Health explores the moral, ethical, and human behavioral dimensions of the search for regenerative solutions, including Half-Earth, Ecological Civilization, Regenerative Economics, and Societal Altruism. 

Tim Jackson is an ecological economist and professor of sustainable development at the UK’s University of Surrey. Jackson directs the Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity, and served as Economics Commissioner with the UK’s Sustainable Development Commission. His previous book, Prosperity Without Growth: Foundations for the Economy of Tomorrow, analyzes how economic growth relates to environmental crises and social recession, and proposes a redefinition of prosperity aligned with well-being.
